Why can an average income mislead you, and how can Restaurant A win both shifts yet lose overall? Start here.

Data Science interview-
Interview-এ প্রশ্নটা আসে এভাবে: “Why would you use median instead of mean?”
Lunch: Restaurant A → 90% Restaurant B → 80%
Dinner: Restaurant A → 70% Restaurant B → 60%
Concept 7: Simpson’s Paradox →

Where do I start, and how much is enough?
That’s the question everyone preparing for a Data Science interview runs into.
On one side there’s Statistics and Probability; on the other, Machine Learning, Python, SQL and Production ML. The longer the topic list gets, the more scattered the preparation becomes. Many people memorise definitions and formulas, then freeze the moment the interviewer asks the question from a slightly different angle.
I wrote a book to fix that: 100+ Core Concepts for Data Science Interviews. It covers 132 concepts in simple Bangla, each following the same flow:
Concept → Simple Intuition → Practical Example → Essential Formula → Uses & Limitations → Interview-ready Explanation
The whole book is now completely free and online: read the book → (in Bangla)
Before you start, here are two quick questions that show what the book is like.
Question 1: is the average income really “typical”?
Five people have these monthly incomes (in BDT):
20,000 25,000 30,000 35,000 200,000
The mean says 62,000. Yet four of the five people earn 35,000 or less. A single extreme value (an outlier) has dragged the mean far upwards. Here the median (30,000) represents the group much better.
In an interview it comes up as: “Why would you use median instead of mean?” For the answer, when you need the mode, and why this matters for data like salaries or delivery times, see Concept 1: Mean, Median and Mode →
Question 2: win both shifts, lose overall?
The delivery success rates of two restaurants:
Lunch: Restaurant A → 90% Restaurant B → 80%
Dinner: Restaurant A → 70% Restaurant B → 60%
A is ahead at lunch and ahead at dinner. Yet when you combine all the orders, Restaurant B has the higher overall success rate.
How is that possible? Hint: look at how many orders each restaurant got at each time of day. The full calculation (72% vs 78%) and why this mistake is dangerous in A/B testing are in Concept 7: Simpson’s Paradox →
